Dear MC Hammer,

Good morning. NOTE: I AM NOT ASKING FOR ANY MONEY OR A HOOK-UP IN THE MUSIC INDUSTRY. My name is Corey Olds and I am the co-founder of Excelsus Foundation, an educational foundation based in Oakland, California, that conducts a back-to-school academic tune-up for African-American boys in Oakland. One of our goals is to verse these boys in the art of public speaking and group discussion. Having watched your series "Hammertime" on A&E, I appreciated those episodes wherein you addressed a public audience, notably your talk at the symposium on media hosted by the Stanford University business school (my alma mater).

If your time permits, would you consider coming to briefly speak (no more than 30-45 minutes) to the Excelsus boys (grades 6-9) about the importance of public image and speaking--nothing technical, simply anecdotal and personal--on August 4,5, or 6 at 2162 Mountain Boulevard in the Montclair section of Oakland?

Here is a brief statement about our program:
Excelsus Foundation will conduct a one-week, back-to-school preparation for 10 to 20 African-American boys who will be entering grades 6-12 this autumn. During these sessions, students will be instructed in English grammar, composition, and oral communication, as well as learn the basics of study skills, self-discipline, and a positive outlook on life. The ultimate goal of Excelsus Foundation is to prepare these boys to become formally educated, self-determined, and responsible young men who will seek a college education as means to achieve social and economic mobility, as well as political awareness.

At your earliest convenience, Mr. Hammer, I would welcome your response.

Sincerely,

Corey Olds
Co-Founder
Excelsus Foundation

P.S. If you want to know a little bit more about me, do not hesitate to check out my blog (picaro-bullion.blogspot.com), google me, or see my profile below:

In 1991, Corey Olds graduated from Oberlin College (Oberlin, Ohio) with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in French literature. From there, he matriculated to Stanford University, where he pursued a joint Ph.D. in History and Humanities. Upon receiving graduate degrees from Stanford, Mr. Olds became an assistant professor of history at Portland State University (Portland, Oregon) in 2001. Prior to accepting his professorship, Olds worked as a full-time history teacher at The Branson School in Ross, California.

In 2005, Olds accepted the position of director of curriculum development at the Andre Agassi College Preparatory Academy in Las Vegas, Nevada. In addition to writing curriculum for the middle and high schools, he taught U.S. history and Latin. Olds is also the recipient of educational grants from the Las Vegas Rotary Club and the Target Corporation.

As an educational entrepreneur, Mr. Olds has been delivering supplemental education services (ranging from English grammar and composition to verbal preparation for standardized tests to foreign languages and African-American history) to middle and secondary schoolers through Futurum, which he founded in June of 2006. His clients have included families in Nevada and in California, where he has also contracted with independent schools such as Head-Royce School, The Urban School, and San Francisco Day School.

In July of 1992, Olds received the Helping Hands Award for Outstanding Young Adult Achievement from A Better Community Development, Inc. of Canton, Ohio, for his work in the field of education.
