Homeless in America

The fact that so many are currently homeless and many more are facing homelessness in this terrible housing market, lends itself to the opportunity for us to address being homeless in America. This is a major issue and I am confident that the answers are here on the net in a collaborative network. More later.....

I can't imagine the pain of parents who's kids are living on the streets homeless. Lets begin to take a close look at the problem and come up with possible solutions. All hands..it could be you..it could be your kids are loved ones..

It seems like the solution is to tackle everything together.

Right after Hurricane Katrina, I volunteered one day at a center set up on campus at the University of South Carolina. Folks were coming fresh off the bus from Louisiana and Mississippi to what used to be a Naval Reserve center that the University had bought and sat on. (It was brought up to useful in about two days--if only the University worked at that speed usually!)

The beauty of this setup was that folks would leave the facilities ready to start back on the path to recovery. Food, housing in local hotels, clothing, transit passes, some medical care, education (both K-12 and college), the whole enchilada. If a person needed it, they were able to get it or get to it from there.

If that cover-all-the-bases approach can work for people who've lost everything in a natural disaster, I'm willing to bet that it could be adapted to work for people who don't have much to start with. The challenge then becomes getting all the right groups together without a rallying cry along the lines of a major hurricane and keeping them together for longer than the two months or so that the center here at USC was open for. (The site USC set up for Katrina is still up.)

For what it's worth...

MC.. a movie-recommend from North.. on HOW to make differences to inner-city kids in turmoil out there.. facing wars, we on the out-side of "their" world, cannot begin to comprehend...

Movie: true story events

- Freedom Fighters
with Hillary Swank as the teacher-who's idealisms, knocked down racial tension, and instilled hope in warring students.

Another 30 minutes of the movie, and the awakenings, will be "forever" for me...

OOps, correction on the film name:

The Freedom Writers Diary

Erin Gruell was the idealistic teacher whom made an impact..

It just ended... they show the real teacher and class at the end!

Wow, they changed history through HOPE!
