Marvin and Diana Ross put out an album in the 70's; I LOVED it, and played it constantly!!(wish I still had it)

Marvin was a man before his time; his songs deep, reflecting and probing our hearts and minds, to find the anchor of truth...

Marvin's messages in his songs are as relevent today, as they were 30 years ago--if ONLY, the world had listened---30 yrs ago...

Yo Hammer,

this is dame (28 m, from 51st and e14th.. waaay before it was "international" LOL.)

Anyway, I'm a big lifelong Fan, and just saw your in depth interview over at internetscelebrities.com (I read dallaspenn.com on the reg..)

Anyway, keep doing it moving, you are such a role model to me as a Man from Oakland. I don't know too many, if you know what I mean.. Alot of males, not many men.

Thanks SKB.

Just had a vivid image of riding w/ Pops and uncles from Oakland to Newark where my dad would play in a weekly softball tournament at the Twin Creeks comples, and we would listen religiously (no pun intended) to the album that had, and I'll probably butcher the name, "this world can't shake me".. {the way I feel today, and tomorrow, I'll feel the same old way....)...

It would be years before I got hip to the original sample source, but your interpretation added something still. Thanks for that.

And the earliest hammer memory is watching the "let's get it started video" on soulbeat when I lived across the street from Brookdale park.... (Ironically, I remember that park being used in the pumps in a bump video).

Keep it P.I. Hammer.. A true OG. Hope the fam is well.

Thanks for this post Hammer. I always loved Marvin Gaye's music. It brings back fond memories of spending time with my parents, playing cards & listening to his music along with Al Green, & Sly & the Family Stone, to name a few. Such good times I cherish and miss terribly. Mr. Gaye was one of a kind. Bravo.....:)

A great antiwar / peace song. Just as relevant today as the day it was written. 40 years later... oh my.

Hammer, step it up. Be the leader.

Hammer,

As I know no other way to reach you and your family, I've had to subscribe to Google in order to post a comment to your blog. A cousin of yours, my father, just recently passed and I'm trying to get the word to my father's family in California. He grew up in Bastrop, Louisiana, which is where I was told your mother grew up as well. I sent an email to 'mchammerblog@gmail.com', but I'm not sure if you even check that account. Please send an email to shaundollyn@msn.com and I can give you all the details. (This is my last resort.)

Hi,
Just wanted to say you did a fantastic job Monday night in Brooklyn. The crowd gave you a bad rap (no pun intended) but I loved the performance. You really are a fabulous showman. I'd pay to see you again, and, hopefully, get to be one of the audience members who dances on stage with you. That whole lineup was excellent and has inspired me to go in a more hip-hop direction with my own music. Thanks for playing and I hope I see you again.

I will check the email on the family matter.

We loved the Brooklyn crowd... The show was off the chain!! The way they chanted..."Go Hammer" on "Turn This Mutha Out" and partied on "Got Me Goin"..along with the great reception on the opening song, "Lets Get It Started".. My dancers, crew and I, fell in love with Brooklyn!

Oh Darn

I hate I missed your show Hammer.
My husband and I are playing a vacation to New York this week to see Fantasia Barrino as Celie in "The Color Purple." I am so excited this is my first time to see a Broadway play and go to New York.

Larry, I agree Marvin issued a great challenge to all of us: Mothers, Fathers, Brothers, Sisters

Time to Look - See what's goin' on, and it's up to us to find a way, based on love!

Mother, mother
There's too many of you crying
Brother, brother, brother
There's far too many of you dying
You know we've got to find a way
To bring some lovin' here today -
Ya

Father, father
We don't need to escalate
You see, war is not the answer
For only love can conquer hate

You know we've got to find a way
To bring some lovin' here today

Picket lines and picket signs
Don't punish me with brutality
Talk to me, so you can see
Oh, what's going on
[Hotola...]
What's going on
Ya, what's going on
Ah, what's going on

In the mean time
Right on, baby
Right on
Right on

Father, father, everybody thinks we're wrong
Oh, but who are they to judge us
Simply because our hair is long
Oh, you know we've got to find a way
To bring some understanding here today
Oh

Picket lines and picket signs
Don't punish me with brutality
Talk to me
So you can see
What's going on
Ya, what's going on
Tell me what's going on
I'll tell you what's going on - Uh
Right on baby
Right on baby

Amen

-Peace
